Sag Harbor addresses a simple but critical challenge—transforming an underutilized outdoor space into a comfortable, everyday living environment. While the homeowners had recently moved into a beautifully designed new home, the primary outdoor gathering space—a rear deck—was exposed to full sun for much of the day, limiting its usability and comfort.

MPLA’s approach focused on creating shade and atmosphere without compromising the integrity of the existing architecture. A custom pergola was designed as a seamless extension of the home, carefully proportioned and detailed to feel original to the structure rather than an addition. Integrated fans and lighting were incorporated to enhance comfort and extend usability into the evening hours, supporting both quiet family time and casual entertaining.

The result is a refined outdoor room that transforms the experience of the space—providing relief from the sun while maintaining openness and connection to the surrounding landscape. What was once an inhospitable deck is now a shaded, inviting environment that supports daily life outdoors.
